Shape control of size-selected naked platinum nanocrystals

Abstract Controlled growth of far-from-equilibrium-shaped nanoparticles with size selection is essential for the exploration their unique physical and chemical properties. Shape control by wet-chemistry preparation methods produces surfactant-covered surfaces limited understanding due to complexity processes involved. Here, we report controlled production transformation octahedra tetrahedra size-selected platinum nanocrystals clean in an inert gas environment. Molecular dynamics simulations reveal key symmetry-breaking atomic mechanism this autocatalytic shape transformation, confirming experimental conditions required. In-situ heating experiments demonstrate relative stability both octahedral tetrahedral Pt at least up 700 °C that extended surface diffusion higher temperature transforms into equilibrium shape.
